CANCELLED: Breeding Birds of the New Jersey Highlands: Wawayanda State Park

May 30, 2020

Leader: Ryan Goldberg
Focus/Trip synopsisWawayanda State Park, near the northern border of New Jersey and New York, is one of the state’s most important natural heritage sites. At about 1,200 feet elevation, its mixed coniferous-deciduous forests, and Atlantic cedar and rhododendron swamps, attract upwards of 80 different nesting species, and quite a few that typically breed farther north. We’ll hope to hear and see many of them, including potential rarities like Cerulean and Golden-winged Warblers. Here’s an eBird checklist from last June.

Car fee: $25 (plus $5-7 to pay the entrance fee)
Registrar: Ryan Goldberg (email: Ryan.Goldberg@gmail.com)
Registration Period:
 May 23rd   – May 28th

Note: This is an all-day trip with probably 6-8 miles of trail walking, so please come prepared. We’ll depart at 6 in the morning from Brooklyn for the roughly 75-minute drive. The state park charges a $20 car fee after Memorial Day for non-residents, which we’ll split evenly.
