SUMMARY:Members Only Weekend trip: Virginia’s Great Dismal Swamp (5 Days)
DESCRIPTION:Leaders: Peter Dorosh and Bob O’Neill\nFocus: Songbird migration\, shorebirds and early breeding birds; nature discoveries.\nCar fee: $200.00\nRegistrar: Peter Dorosh Prosbird@aol.com (or backup Prosbird@gmail.com)\nRegistration Period: Feb 1st–May 5th   \nNote: Trip caps at 12 members; this is a four night hotel (in Suffolk) stay with trip leaving early Thursday morning\, returning Monday evening. \nTrips Synopsis: This five day journey will be the club’s most ambitious weekend trip to date. We’ll be going during the peak of shorebird migration\, as well as breeding birds; the emphasis is on endemic southern species. Over 200 species of birds have been identified in the refuge; ninety-six of these have been reported as nesting on or near the refuge. Days one and five will be travel dates with “halfway” stops at Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge (VA) and Cape Henlopen State Park (DE) where the party will board the Cape May-Lewes Ferry on the return trip. Habitats are characterized by coastal plains and pine /deciduous forest within an 112\,000 acre region. The forest is comprised of five major types: pine\, Atlantic white-cedar\, maple-black gum\, tupelo-bald cypress\, and sweet gum-oak poplar. Lake Drummond is a large freshwater body that entices a multiple of species. But the primary landscape is marsh and that ensures a plethora of species to enjoy. Besides Great Dismal Swamp\, other nearby birding locations could be visited. pending final preparations. \nSite Profile: https://www.fws.gov/refuge/great_dismal_swamp/ \n
