Boogie Down Birding: The Bronx’s Pelham Bay Park
March 22
Leaders: Tim Graves and Ryan Goldberg
Participant limit: 12
Focus: Visit the city’s largest park, Pelham Bay, in the only borough that is part of the North American continent. (The rest is an archipelago.) We’ll look for a range of species, such as early migrating passerines in its coastal forest, waterfowl on Long Island Sound, and wintering shorebirds on the Sound’s rocky Twin Island. We’ll also explore the peaceful woods of Hunter Island and its famous pine grove. It’s been many years since the BBC has traveled to this great park.
Registrar: Ryan Goldberg, email: ryangoldberg@gmail.com
Registration period: March 16-20
Carpool fee: $10
Notes: This is a carpool trip so the exact number of participants will depend on the availability of drivers. We’ll leave Brooklyn at 7 AM to reach the park a little before 8. This will be a full-day trip, so please bring lunch and water. On Twin Island we’ll be walking on rocks that can be wet, so please wear waterproof shoes with a good grip. Otherwise, we’ll walk approximately four miles on relatively flat terrain. Please bring a scope if you have one.
Current club members and drivers will receive priority. If you need to cancel, please do so at least 24 hours in advance so we can offer someone your spot.
