FLOYD BENNETT BIRDING AND BEACH GRASS WALK WITH THE NYC PARKS PLANT ECOLOGY CENTER AND NURSERY

May 10

Leader: Heydi Lopes

Participant limit: 16

Focus: We’ll head out during peak spring migration and see what’s moving through. We’ll be watching for warblers like Blackburnian, Black-throated Blue, Bay-breasted, Cape May, and Magnolia, along with orioles, tanagers, and flycatchers. On a good day, we can see 50–80 species, with totals sometimes reaching close to 90.

We’ll also be joined by staff from the NYC Parks Plant Ecology Center and Nursery to learn about their work and the plants grown at Floyd Bennett Field. NYC Parks manages three acres of seed increase plots here, growing 15 species of native grasses and wildflowers that support habitat creation and ecological restoration projects across the city. The NYC Parks Plant Ecology Center and Nursery provides plants and seeds for restoration and conservation work on public lands throughout New York City.

Our co-hosts are Seth August, Senior Seed Program Supervisor, and Paul Raucci, Seed Program Coordinator, both with the NYC Parks Plant Ecology Center and Nursery. Seth oversees the collection, storage, farming, and distribution of seed for projects across the city, while Paul manages seed farming and distribution work on Staten Island.
