Meet at the Hook: Birding on the New Jersey Coast

Focus: Winter waterfowl, raptors, irruptive finches, and open-ground specialists like snow buntings and horned larks at one of the Garden State’s best and most beautiful birding sites, Sandy Hook, an eight-mile-long spit of land that juts into New York’s Lower Bay and boasts rich oceanside and bayside dunes, marshes, and cedar groves. Sandy Hook is part of Gateway National Recreation Area, which also includes coastal sites in the city like Fort Tilden, Breezy Point Tip, Jamaica Bay, Great Kills, and Plumb Beach.

Registration Period: Dec. 4-8

Participant limit: 16 members (4 cars). This is a carpool trip; drivers will get priority, with top priority to drivers who can stay a full day. Driving directions/meeting location will be communicated upon registration. All passengers must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Current club members will receive priority over non-members.

This will be an all-day trip, with a meeting time at Sandy Hook of 8 AM, which means drivers will be expected to leave from Brooklyn at 6:30 AM. The drive is approximately 75 minutes. Bring a scope, lunch, snacks, water, etc., and be prepared for all conditions. We will be walking about 3-4 miles, mostly on paved paths or boardwalk and some stretches on sand.
